Teletherapy &
Therapeutic Orientation

“At the core of our integrative approach lies the nurturing of the relationship we have with ourselves. Therapy should include developing self-care skills that heal and nourish such relationship. These skills can accelerate treatment and sustain emotional well-being”.

We are experienced psychologists who work with adults, couples, and the elderly. With an integrative approach, and via teletherapy, we assist patients as they address personal issues, emotions, anxiety, relationship challenges, traumatic experiences, existential concerns, and more. With our comprehensive approach we also assist patients to develop a variety of life skills that promote self-care and emotional well-being. We invite you to consider our general approach to therapy. It is important that you feel comfortable with the professional of your choice. We also invite you to request a no-cost 15-minute appointment with the psychologist you select.

Individual challenges, relationship issues, trauma experiences, and the existential realities of life produce difficult emotions, anxieties, beliefs, and physiological reactions. As a result, our bodies protect themselves, and automatically create defenses that provide temporary relief. Paradoxically, these defenses also keep us stuck in the status quo of life, in a condition where suffering is perpetuated; in a place where intimate desires and life meaning are not pursued. Frequently, this phenomenon develops into states of despair, depression, anxiety, and illness which require therapeutic intervention.

Our psychologists will help you address the above-mentioned challenges in a clear, compassionate, and result-oriented way. Their approach is integrative in nature. The complex relationship between emotions, anxieties, defenses, and body reactions are explored, not only intellectually, but also organically, at an experiential level. Furthermore, our therapists will also ground your issues within the context of human relationship where most emotional difficulties occur. This comprehensive approach can accelerate treatment because it attempts to address lifelong underlying issues that keep us stuck in life.

Our approach brings together the best of neuropsychology, mindfulness, somatic-based therapy, existential philosophy, attachment theories, dynamic psychology, positive psychology, trauma therapy, existential-humanistic orientations, cognitive-emotional based approaches, and life-coaching strategies.

We treat conditions usually defined as depression, anxiety, trauma, post-traumatic stress conditions, grieving processes of all types, medical issues with psychological components; relationship, marriage, sexual, dating, and divorce issues; mid-life and aging issues; religion and spirituality transitions; career changes; men and gender issues; personal growth concerns, etc. We invite you to request a NO-COST 15 minute appointment with the professional of your choice.

Professional Orientation

The existential realities of life produce difficult emotions, anxieties, beliefs, and physiological reactions. As result our body protects itself and creates defenses that provide temporary relief. Paradoxically, these defenses also keep us stuck in the status quo of life where suffering is perpetuated; in a place where intimate desires and life meaning are not pursued. Frequently, this phenomenon develops into states of despair, depression, anxiety, and illness that require therapeutic intervention.

Dr Bentson will help you address a variety of personal and relationship challenges in a clear, compassionate, and result-oriented way. His approach is integrative in nature. The complex relationship between emotions, anxieties, defenses, and body reactions are explored, not only intellectually, but also at an experiential level. This increases awareness regarding the need to develop self-care skills. The anxiety provoking realities of change, loss, abandonment, aging, illness, choice, meaninglessness, etc. are also considered within therapy. Finally, Dr. Bentson will ground issues within the context of human relationship where most emotional difficulties occur. His comprehensive approach can accelerate treatment because it attempts to address underlying issues that tend to keep us stuck in life.

Here is a sample of issues at the root of personal and relationship conflicts: inability to tolerate strong emotions (anger, fear, rage, sadness, guilt, shame, etc.); unresolved childhood trauma; disconnection from emotions; fragmentation patterns that derive from trauma, abandonment and inundation anxiety; negative self-belief patterns; denial, intellectualizing and minimizing defenses; blaming; fear of intimacy and emotional closeness; sexual inhibition and disfunction; rigid non-acceptance, boundary and thinking states; depression that masks anger and sadness; detachment from feelings and body sensations; fear of emotional closeness; lack of connection with self; withholding tactics; fear of expressing desires; emotional numbness; low sexual desire; wishful thinking mechanisms; over-reliance of religious beliefs; strict adherence to family mandates; inability to tolerate new experiences; fear of expressing truth; inability to verbalize feelings; inability to ask for what one needs and wants; chronic grieving processes; gender biases; etc.

Dr. Bentson’s integrative approach brings together the best of neuropsychology, mindfulness, somatic-based therapy, existential philosophy, attachment therapy, short-term dynamic psychology, positive psychology, trauma therapy, existential-humanistic orientations, cognitive-emotional based approaches, and life-coaching strategies.

Skilled Nursing Centers

“Non-pharmacological approaches to treatment are recommended by government agencies. Psychological care is a fundamental alternative for the changing population residing within today’s skilled nursing centers”

Patients within medical settings experience a variety of psychological and emotional issues that can have detrimental ramifications when left untreated. Among the most basic scenarios are those conditions resulting from medical, aging, and adjustment issues, which frequently mask difficult emotions. Early intervention is recommended before these conditions become entrenched in depression and anxiety disorders. Other issues commonly encountered within medical facilities are loneliness, abandonment, family, and childhood issues; end-of life issues; pain and sleep disturbances; dementia; hallucinations; schizophrenia; and other psychiatric symptoms. Chronic and co-morbid medical conditions are common in today’s skilled nursing facilities. These often mask trauma and abuse issues. This requires diagnosis and treatment by an experienced and cautious professional. Facilities are also being populated with adults suffering from debilitating strokes, obesity, spinal cord injuries, diabetes, and other chronic disabilities. These patients frequently experience depression and anxiety-related conditions requiring psychological and emotional treatment.

Our psychologists have extensive experience working within skilled nursing centers. Their professionalism, integrative approach, warmth, and boundary setting abilities, as well as their fluency in English and Spanish set them apart in this field.

Our Psychologists will conduct diagnostic evaluations and determine medical necessity based on up-to-date Medicare and Medi-Cal guidelines. Moreover, by providing psychological services to patients, the facility will be complying with government recommendations regarding increased use of non-pharmacological treatments. Our psychologists work closely with management, social workers, family members, psychiatrists, physicians, and the nursing staff.

Our psychologist developed a variety of easy to use self-care skills for medical patients. These practical tools help them take responsibility over their healing process and their emotional well-being. These self-care skills include self-relaxation breathing, communication and listening skills, positive self-talk, conflict resolution skills, sleep and pain strategies, etc.

Our psychologists can also train the nursing staff regarding issues commonly confronted within medical settings. Furthermore, as a way of assisting the staff in their important caretaking role, our psychologists have also developed a variety of self-care skills that apply to their job and circumstances. Among them we include listening skills, self-relaxation skills; boundary setting abilities; how to work with difficult patients, etc.

The Organic Self Seminars

Our Life-Skills Seminars attempt to integrate biological, existential and relationship issues by weaving them into practical concepts and skills that are easy to understand and use in daily life. These seminars help participants experience self-awareness, self-compassion, to build self-care and relationships skills. This training can be adjusted to the needs and characteristics of each audience. In Spanish the seminar is titled ESCUCHANDONOS (www.escuchandonos.com) which is provided within the US and Latin America.
